regarding John "Jack" Garafalo's Letter to the Editor on June 11, 2014:
Mr. Garafalo writes: "However, 100 percent of the criminals who these regulations are trying to control will never follow them. Get it? The law won't work!" This is his argument for repealing the NY Safe Act.
I have to agree with him 100 percent. But why stop with the NY Safe Act? If there are other laws that the criminals will "never follow" then why have them on the books? Using his example, 100 percent of underage drinkers won't follow the legal drinking age, so we should ask Wegman's to stop asking for identification at the registers. 100 percent of shoplifters won't follow the anti-theft laws, so let's remove the laws from the books. 100 percent of speeders on the Thruway won't follow the speed limit signs, so we should probably remove the laws and the signs (think of the money we will save).
Or maybe, just maybe, removing the laws that a tiny minority don't follow isn't the answer. Maybe we should keep the laws, and when those laws are broken we can enforce the laws by incarcerating those that put us in danger by violating the Safe Act.
And, just as a favor to me, keep those other laws I mentioned above too.
