Liverpool track and field stars Ore Akinpelu and Ryheim Lawes refused to let a little rain – or a lot of rain – affect the way they performed at last weekend’s state championship meet at Middletown High School.

O'Hara leads Northstars past Brockport, East Meadow

All the Cicero-North Syracuse softball team wanted to do was win one more game than it did each of the last three seasons - to "Finish It", as they so succinctly put it. And the Northstars did finish the task on Saturday, winning the state Class AA championship for the first time since it prevailed on its home diamond in 2006.

Liverpool senior Karl Deuble and Cicero-North Syracuse junior Joey Petrin are both proud part-owners of a state boys golf championship. Deuble and Petrin helped Section III capture a tight battle for team honors during the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones course in Ithaca.

But O’Hara got to play - and stand out - in an important game at the SU diamond while still wearing a Cicero-North Syracuse softball uniform during Saturday’s Section III Class AA final against Liverpool.

Warriors stop Central Square; Northstars oust Auburn

Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse cruised through their respective Section III Class AA softball semifinal matchups at Hopkins Road Park on Thursday night, setting up the same final meeting for the fourth time in five years. In the first AA semifinal, Liverpool took down Central Square 4-1, and C-NS followed with a 10-0 drubbing of Auburn.

Way back in October, boys golfers from Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse recorded high finishes in the Section III Class AA championship tournament. But the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships don’t take place until the first weekend in June, at Cornell University’s Robert Trent Jones-designed layout. So they have to wait more than seven months for a resolution to the season.

For 46 minutes of Friday night’s Section III Class A semifinal at Bragman Stadium, it appeared that Liverpool simply could not match up with undefeated top seed Fayetteville-Manlius. Then in less than two minutes, the Warriors almost made the most extraordinary comeback in the program’s entire history, erasing most of a five-goal deficit in a frantic late charge before the Hornets held on to prevail by a score of 10-9.

Young, poised and fearless, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls lacrosse team pulled off what no one else had in seven years - namely, beat West Genesee in the Section III Class A playoffs. Hanna Haven's goal with 38.0 seconds left proved the difference-maker as the Northstars stunned the top-seeded, defending state champion Wildcats 7-6 in Friday's Class A semifinal at CBA's Alibrandi Stadium.
