Liverpool girls pull away, earn indoor track league honors

Warriors top C-NS for National division crown

— Without any question, the Liverpool girls indoor track and field team was the best side in the CNY Counties League National division this winter.

Any doubts were erased in Thursday night's league championship meet at SRC Arena, where the Warriors, with 169 points, easily claimed the title as Cicero-North Syracuse (99 points) edged Baldwinsville (98 points) for the runner-up spot.

Twice, Ore Akinpelu gave the Warriors individual race victories. She ran 300 meters in 41.91 seconds and, in the 600-meter run, Akinpelu edged B'ville's Mackenzie Ross, 1:44.64 to 1:44.81, with teammate Juliana Basla (1:47.11) in fourth and C-NS's Marissa Colburn fifth.

Basla gained her own title in the 1,000-meter run in 3:11.96, holding off the Northstars' Amanda Shuman, who was second in 3:14.48. And Akinpelu added one more title when she joined Jazmine Herbert, Alexus Gerbacher and Danielle Sims to take the 4x200 relay in 1:51.36, where C-NS was fifth.

Key points came from Morgan Mahoney and Abby McNamara. The Liverpool pair went 1-2 in the 1,500-meter run as Mahoney won in 5:04.92 and McNamara (5:08.29) was second, leaving C-NS's Nicole Watterud (5:15.24) in third place.

Also, in the 3,000-meter run Mahoney was second in 10:44.62 and Abby McNamara (10:49.05) was third, again finishing ahead of Watterud in fourth. Sims, Jessica Turner, Yasmeen Griffin and Kalilah Scott were second for the Warriors in the 4x400 relay in 4:22.76, with C-NS's quartet of Andrea Stout, Kristen Schug, Marie LeRoy and Rachel Wisely third in 4:29.68.

Hannah Szumloz, for C-NS, earned second place in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.44 seconds, with Jade Jenkins third in 9.60 seconds and Liverpool's Tammy Brodie fourth. The Warriors were third (10:35.93) and the Northstars fourth (10:39.22) in the 4x800 relay.

C-NS got lots of points in field events, including Javielle Fanizzi winning the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 4 inches as Liverpool's Tammy Brodie was second (15'5") and Catherine Rowell (14'11 1/2") was fourth.
