Northstars, Warriors both get wins at Select Meet

Hyde, Broughton among C-NS stars; Liverpool girls take 4x200

Especially on the boys end, indoor track teams from Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool made big strides during last Tuesday’s Section III Select Meet at SRC Arena, the last event before this Friday’s Section III Class AA championships.

In the boys meet, C-NS’s Mike Hyde again won the pole vault, clearing 13 feet 6 inches to hold off Old Forge’s Connor Rockhill (13 feet) for top honors.

Moving to the oval, the Northstars won the 4x200 relay as Frank Volino, Mark Broughton, Shawn Webb and Cameron Shaughnessy finished in 1:36.57, more than a second ahead of runner-up Baldwinsville.

Liverpool made its lone stand in the 4x400 relay, where Keewan Rondinello, Jeff Conley, Steve Fiorello and Ryheim Lawes finished in 3:35.97,edging Jamesville-DeWitt (3:36.35) for first place.

Volino, on his own, earned third place in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.13 seconds as Webb got to fourth (38.51 seconds) in the 300-meter dash and Broughton was fourth in the 55-meter dash in 6.81 seconds.

Neil Gill, Anthony Lupia, Paul DeGennaro and Ken Ryan were fourth (8:38.03) in the 4x800 relay. Lupia worked his way to third in the mile in 4:32.77, with Ryan fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:45.52 and Gill fourth (9:44.46) in the 3,200-meter run. Avery Yarn rose to fifth in the 600-meter run (1:30.01) and also was ninth in the long jump.

Joel Brousseau had a fifth-place high jump of 5 feet 10 inches. Bryson Mayes took sixth in the triple jump (40 feet 6 ¼ inches), while Austin George got eighth in the shot put.

Over in the girls meet, Liverpool won another relay – the 4x200, where Tammy Brodie, Connie Torres, Catherine Rowell and Ore Akinpelu finished in 1:50.90, nearly two seconds better than runner-up Nottingham (1:52.62), while C-NS finished 11th.

On her own, Akinpelu ran the 600 in 1:41.70, second to Fayetteville-Manlius’ Heather Martin (1:38.13), and she also helped Torres, Rowell and Leah Dixon get third in the 4x400 in 4:15.69.
