Track Northstars sweep season-opening relays

C-NS boys hold off Liverpool; girls earn 100 points

— A Cicero-North Syracuse track and field season that will culminate with hosting the June 8-9 state championship meet began with an event at a much smaller scale.

Still, the Northstars won both sides of the ninth annual C-NS Invitational, earning 100 points on the girls side to easily outdistance the field and 92 points to top rival Liverpool (69 points) and a dozen other opponents.

For the boys, Neil Gill, Ken Ryan, Paul DeGennaro and Colin Greenseich ran in the mile relay, their times adding up to 19:03.72, well clear of the field as Liverpool took third in 19:24.65.

Yet C-NS also handled shorter distances, seeing Cameron Shaughnessy, Avery Yarn, Shawn Webb and Mark Broughton top the field in the 4x100 relay in 43.98 seconds. Liverpool was fifth in 47.24 seconds.

In the 400 hurdles, Frank Volino and Sam Nassar were second and fourth among individuals and won the relay in 1:58.08, with no other side under 2:10. Volino and Morgan Austen earned second in the 110 high hurdles in a combined 34.91 seconds.

Mike Hyde won the individual pole vault, clearing 12 feet as he and Shaughnessy (fourth) shared team honors with 23’6”. Joel Brousseau cleared 6’4” in the high jump, half a foot better than Liverpool’s Zach Harris, as Brousseau and Bryson Mayes, with a combined 12’, won and the Warriors (11’6”) tied Indian River for second.

Austen and Mayes won the triple jump, their combined attempts of 81 feet 8 inches more than a foot ahead of Ithaca, with Liverpool in fifth place.

Austin George and Joe Castaldo helped C-NS get second (82’ 10”) in the shot put, just ahead of Liverpool’s Nick Leedom and Joe Duffus (80’6”) in third place. Yarn and Brousseau were fourth in the long jump.

Liverpool had its own wins, too, including Zavon Watkins, Keewan Rondinello, Ryheim Lawes and Steve Fiorello claiming the 4x400 relay in 3:26.41, with C-NS (3:48.65) in fourth place. That same quartet also won the 1,600 sprint medley in a time of 3:35.67, the Northstars taking fifth place.
