Liverpool, CNS golfers compete at AA sectional

Six advance to state tournament qualifier in May

— Each of the area’s three boys golf teams culminated their respective fall campaigns by going to Green Lakes State Park for Wednesday’s Section III Class AA championship tournament.

Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue side was sixth, with a total of 409, six shots ahead of Liverpool (415) in seventh place. CNS Green took 10th place as Fayetteville-Manlius, with a score of 386, edged West Genesee (390) for the top spot.

Among individuals, Liverpool’s Karl Deuble had the best showing, as he finished alone in sixth place with a three-over-par 74. Steve Baldini added an 81 on the Warriors’ behalf.

For CNS, Mike Mento posted a 78, with Mike Cavallo and Luke Cavallo each shooting 80 and Austin Parzych added an 81. That quartet, along with Deuble and Baldini, advanced to next May’s overall sectional tournament, to be played at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course in Hamilton.

By the tiniest margin imaginable, Liverpool managed to beat Central Square last Tuesday at Greenview, even though both the Warriors and Red Hawks finished with equal team totals of 210.

What it came down to was the fact that Liverpool’s sixth finisher, David Pisciarino, had a 44, two shots better than Central Square’s sixth player.

In front of them, Baldini shot a 39, tying the Red Hawks’ Brandon Payne (the eventual sectional champion with a 71 at Green Lakes), while John Rojek and Ryan Contegni each shot 42. Deuble had a 43 and Sean Martens posted a 44 to produce the tie,and Piscarino broke it.

Cicero-North Syracuse’s Blue team won again on Tuesday, topping the combined Syracuse squad 222-251 at Northern Pines. Dan Drake, with a 42, led a sweep of the top three scores as Wes Smiley posted a 43 and Jason Wisely added a 45. Adam Wisely had a 46 and Alex Beck shot a 49.
